Like many others, I was surprised to see Trevoh Chalobah’s name included on the team sheet for the UEFA Super Cup. The 22-year old Englishman had never featured in an official Chelsea first team match before Thomas Tuchel selected him. His performance turned many heads and gave him a place in the starting eleven for Chelsea’s opening match this past weekend. After another good performance it seems Tuchel will keep Chalobah in the squad for the rest of the season, so if you want to learn more about the (probable) newest member of the squad, keep reading.
Early Years
Chalobah signed for Chelsea as an under-9 and has played a few positions but mostly right back and center back, while occasionally playing midfield. Throughout his years in the academy Chalobah was very successful. He featured in every game in the FA Youth Cup winning side in 2015/16, while also winning the UEFA Youth League that year too. In the next few years, Trevoh continued his development and in 2017/18, was occasionally named among substitutes in the men’s first team’s team, which proved to be the last step until he could go out on loan.
Loans
Before breaking into the first team this season, Chalobah spent three seasons on loan, with three different clubs: Ipswich, Huddersfield, and Lorient. The first of these three loans was to Ipswich Town F.C. during the 2018/19 season. They were eventually relegated from the Championship despite 44 good appearances from Trevoh. He then played 37 times for Huddersfield Town on his second loan during the 2019/20 season. His third and final loan was to FC Lorient, who were in Ligue 1, the top French league. He had 30 appearances for them that season.
This Season
Chalobah had the opportunity to impress Tuchel this preseason because of the absence of many Chelsea players who were given time off after the summer competitions. Chalobah took his chance and had various impressive performances in friendlies leading to the UEFA Super Cup match where he was handed the surprise appearance and the rest is history...
